Image Archives collection 1880 - present

The Image Archives at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science contains over 777,000 images in a variety of formats, including prints, negatives, films, videotapes, glass slides and glass print negatives, film transparencies in 35mm and large format, electronic images such as those on CDs, and historical photographic equipment. It also contains mostly analog, but some digital, videotape. The subjects of the images in the archives are as comprehensive and varied as the museum disciplines themselves. There are archival photographs of archaeology and paleontology excavations; numerous photos and films of worldwide flora and fauna, including birds, mammals, fossils, dinosaurs and others; photographs of museum exhibits and artifacts; scenery of locations around the world; and a collection of postcards. There are images of people from worldwide locations as well as a collection of planetarium slides. Many images document the growth of the Museum throughout its history. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has 104 dioramas depicting the context of many of the Museum's collections of specimens and artifacts. From around 1910, the first diorama-type displays at DMNS consisted of flat oil paintings placed behind specimens.
